Relaxing at a Kelong with the guys.
We depart from Church at about 3am. Reach Kluang at about 6
in the morning for a nice authentic Roti Canai/Tosai breakfast.
Arriving at the Jetty, we see a sea snake. One of a few we will come across
during the next few days.
At about 9.30am, the boat comes to pick us up, and we're off!
The sign reads "please put on your life jackets". Hmm.... Don't think those
things their wearing are life jackets... no?
Our fortress in the sea for the next 3 days. This, folks, is a Kelong. This
Kelong can house 150 people. Amazing.
Joshua immediately starts fishing, and nets two! This wasn't a sign of things to
come however. Still waters and a late monsoon meant very little fish for the
rest of the day.
A small puffer fish
Uhhh... hmm....
Check this fish out...
The moment you touch it, the spines shoot out. Agro.
Meals there were quite interesting. Too bad the old cook had left. Dad says the
old one was really god. The current one was mediocre. Kinda like home cooked
food.
Dad nets a squid
Full moon. Full moon = no fish. haha.
High tide, and the water is about 1 meter below the Kelong platforms. The Kelong
boss says that if the Monsoon had really arrived, it will be barely 2 feet away
from swamping the place. Scary.
On the next day, the waves and currents had still not arrived, though the wind
was picking up nicely. Some of the guys went for a swim. I didn't dare too. Not
only are there fishes all around, there are abandoned fish hooks too.
Tsunami's in the making.
Wheee!
Low tide in the evening Check out the huge difference.
Fish eyeballs. lol.
Dinner on the second night. YUMM.
Absolutely the largest bamboo lala I've ever seen.
Huge puffer fish caught. If a Japanese guy was here, he'd be in heaven. LOL!
Literally, if he didn't know the art of gutting the fish.
Later in the night, the current and waves started coming in. That brought in a
whole lot of fishes too. We caught a lot of Mabung after we watched and learned
from the lady-boss of the Kelong. It was amazing... She was reeling in fish
after fish while we had none. Only after changing our jigs to the exact ones she
was using did we start to see results.
Dividing the loot before we head home. Deep fried fresh fish FTW! Kelong fishing
is really cool. If the cook had been slightly better, things would've been
perfect. haha.
